I saw this link and thought some might be interested. Peter Renzetti is retiring and auctioning off his equipment. He really has everything--unfortunately its in Pennsylvania. But it might be worth a trip. The link is to the auctioneer's site.

Propane versus Natural Gas for my forge.

I know that this is probably a question that has come up in the past.

I know most everyone runs Propane for their forge.

Does any one run Natural gas for their Forge?
What size hole would be required to push the gas through?

I have a 35 LB requlator, would I need to get different type?

I am preparing to build a burner that use a .035 mig orifice to set up a new forge.

Newbie questions on where to buy a gas forge and when to repair an anvil?

Hi everyone;
As a newbie I have a couple of questions for you old pro's.
I have a 101 pound 1879? Mousehole anvil, the top is solid and in probably an 8 out of 10 condition but the edges are not as clean as I would like. Should I have a welder fill in the damage or leave it as is? If I should have it repaired who or where would you take it?
Secondly I want a small gas forge, what is the best value for a small gas forge, where should I buy it, which one is the most for the money?

Tire Hammering at Linda's

This month's meeting was hosted by Linda Holmes-Rubin at her home shop in Canton. Beautiful property, but leave early, it's no small trip! Tony led a medium-short business meeting, and then Lance Ziegler demonstrated the Clay Spencer tire hammer.

I didn't have my camera with me, but if folks will upload the pics they took (instructions on how to upload pics are here) then I'll insert them into this article.

Dressing an Anvil (or Making an Anvil Shaped Object useful)

I saw a thread a while back here about a Harbor Freight Russian made 110# anvil for a real good price. Never having enough tools and stuff around, I went to check it out and came home with one. Kind of rough, still plenty of tool marks as you can see.

[NOTE: all thumbnail images can be clicked for larger image...]

So, I called on my friend Dan Tull. He said it was a good place to start, but we could do a few things to make it a much better tool. Take out the tool marks, put a radius on part of the near and far edge of the face to make nice bends, and try to make that duck bill into a horn.

What steel for tongs?

One of the things I learned while attending a basic blacksmith techniques course earlier this year were a few ways to make tongs. I want to re-inforce the lessons learned and make a few tongs to use in my small shop. What type (not shape) of steel stock do I need?

110 Lb. Russian Made Anvil

I just purchased a 110 Lb. Russian made anvil. It has a Hardie Hole 1 1/8 in. and a Pritchel Hole 3/8 in.

I got it at Harbor Freight (770.592.0955), store #110 at Bells Ferry exit #4 on I-575. The list price was $89.99, but I got it for the sale price of $69.99.

A weird, and possibly useful tool

I found this article on a list I subscribe to--its a rather unique tool for making odd-shaped holes. Unfortunately, I can't quite follow the description of its use. Maybe some of you tool fanatics can help? I would love to see someone demonstrate how to use this thing.

Here is the link ( I couldn't figure out how to paste it).

Budget Bladesmithing at Steve Fowler's

April's meeting was at Stephen Fowler's up in Acworth. Steve makes blades in Japanese and other styles. He demonstrated on basic knifemaking.

Steve's shop is in the corner of his garage. I'm sure I wasn't the only one excited to see someone turning out good looking blades in a shop that was put together in places with chewing gum and baling wire. He's got a homemade forced-air gas forge and put together his own anvil out of a length of forklift fork welded to a piece of 5x5 inch square stock. Ingenuity is high, and he gets the most out of his tools.

Dressing a hammer

I've ordered two new hammers, and will need to dress them (get a good radius on them) when they arrive. Anyone have a resource on that?

Can I do it via stock removal, or do I need to heat them in the forge and put on the radius I want, then re-heat-treat the faces?

Thoughts?
