2009 ABBA Auction

At the October 2008 Meeting the topic of using an annual auction as an additional fundraising source came up. I think it is an excellent idea but will require effort by all of the membership to make it a success. The purpose of this thread is to gauge interest, toss around ideas and coordinate the auction.

Three-and-a-half things needed for a successful action:

STUFF TO SELL

PEOPLE TO BID
ABANA Election

For all of you ABANA members, the election of the Board and passing new by-laws is in process. Don't forget to vote! Alfred McClure is running again this year, and I urge you all to vote for him. Besides, they have some good prizes for turning in your ballot.

Who is running for Office to replace our President at the July 2008 meeting?

I have not seen any posts. Is anyone running for President at the upcoming meeting?

I want to run for the President of the Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association. I have the time to focus on the duties of the president. Even better I can pursue blacksmithing full time. The best part is I will be acquiring a business location for my shop.

I have the skills of a Sales Executive who worked in Healthcare Information Technology for twenty-eight years I am good on the phone. I can talk with anybody easily. I will not be afraid to use phone, email, inperson visits and even bribery to get monthly meetings scheduled with great learning events by skilled masters teaching the members new skills. I began working in metal and jewelry in 1975. I have been working with steel in reconstruction of medieval and ancient armour since 1975. When I began in 1975, we had no experienced smiths in the U.S.. So I researched in the library, used my metal working skills, and trial and error to create helmets, gauntlets, and body armour, so that we could actually practice the fighting skills in armour of historical period and civilizations.

Help needed to help scouts get metalworking badge

To all--

I have been asked to help a group of boy scouts get their metalworking merit badges. I don't see myself as much of a teacher, more of a learner. But I told their scoutmaster that I would host a class and provide equipment and material and as much help as I could. But I need help! There may be as many as 16 boys, but more likely 10 or so. The date is not scheduled, but I'm sure if any of you can help, we can work out a schedule for a Saturday convenient for all of us.

We are showing 2 different meeting places for this month. I believe I am correct by stating that the meeting is at Ivan Bailey's Shop not Andrew Crawfords

Daniell Mableton blacksmith shop mentioned in The Art of Blacksmithing

I'm reading The Art of Blacksmithing and what do I see toward the end of chapter 4?

Last paragraph, page 113 talks about "odd jobs to maintain a living income" and sharpening saws. Top of page 114 Bealer tells of "a blacksmith shop in Mableton, Georgia, operated by the Daniell brothers, which had a most ingenious setting macine designed and made in the shop fir the use of the Daniells."

How cool is that? {BIG GRIN!}

Festival season

The wife and I used to go to craft shows but haven't been to any for a while. I never saw many blacksmiths at any of those shows anyway.

What shows and/or festivals are coming up that I might get to see some smithing in person? I think Yellow Daisy is this weekend...right?

On another note I put in for vacation for October 20 and November 17 so I could come to the Bealer meetings for those months. I hope to finally meet some of you there.

Introduction - Hi! I'm Kevin

Warning - Long winded post to follow!

Hello! My name is Kevin Daniell. My grand father was A. E. Daniell of Mableton and my father was Billy Daniell.

I know that it's a long shot that any of you remember the A. E. Daniell and son blacksmith shop in Mableton but thats my heritage. Both of my brothers worked in the shop but I came along a little too late...the shop was closed when I was a small child. I have been reading "A Blacksmithing Primer" by Randy McDaniel and from the description of the forges, I have determined that A. E. Daniell and son was more of a wagon shop.
