help!

What do you use to take scale off? I am spending WAY too much time power wire brushing. I have always liked a tumbler, as that frees you up to do other things while it's running, IF you can stand the racket. Acid/vinegar dips allow other activities, also. Getting tired of picking wire scrapnel out of my apron or arm.

Research on Blacksmithing emblems

I need help from our knowledgeable group. I am planning on getting my first tattoo when I visit my son Bill (some of you may remember him from meetings) and I'm trying to locate symbols or emblems denoting blacksmithing for possible incorporation into my tat. I've googled away, but so far, no luck. I'm thinking of something like the symbols or shields or emblems (not sure what they are called) that the medieval guilds used for their trades. I know I've seen them carved in stone or in stained glass windows in cathedrals, but I can't seem to locate anything. I did find the crest of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (Mark Aspery is a member) but it is rather complex and I don't think it would be right to use a crest of a group of which I am not a member.

Mark Aspery course

i just wanted to let everyone know what a great class we had with Mark Aspery. We mostly concentrated on making tools to fit our projects--a rose and a wizard head. But Mark worked with each of us to help at whatever level we were at, he can explain things at the most basic level, or with the most technical metallurical terms, whatever you want to know. As for me, one of the most valuable things I took away was learning proper hammering technique. I have pretty severe arthritis, and at every class I've taken the evenings were spent icing and taking Goody's powders for the pain. After much gentle nagging, I was actually able to hammer all day without pain and this means I will probably be able to hammer away through my dotage.

New for abba

Hi all,

I wanted to see if we can further discuss Dan Tull's suggestion about a fund-raising blacksmith auction we can use to increase our bank account and actually accomplish some of our goals. I, for one, think it's a great idea. But there are a few issues we need to discuss and resolve in order to make it a success:
We need to finish whatever paperwork is still outstanding to get our 501-c3 designation so that winning bidders will be able to deduct their contributions as a charitable donation. I know its a time-consuming project, so if we get at it now, it might be approved by fall festival time.

Patina Class

The Sculptnouveau company is giving a class on metal coating, cold patinas and resin casting in Chattanooga on June 21 and 22. It looked like fun, so I signed up. You may be interested too, so go to www.townsendatelier.com or www.sculptnouveau.com for information. The cost is $350.00. I'm hoping to get some tips so I can do a short demo on patinas for my July meeting as a sideline to Alfred's more professional presentation.

Fireplace tool stand (what's been occupying my weekends)

Here's a fireplace tool set I made for my son for Christmas. A a big deer hunter, I thought he would appreciate the elk antler incorporated into it (at 32", it gives him something to hope for!). The tools are basically the same from Jeff Mohr's "Blacksmithing for Home and Hearth", but the stand is of my own design.

ABANA survey

I hope by now you have all responded to the ABANA survey--I think members were sent it automatically, others may have to get it off the ABANA site. We have all had complaints in the past about the conferences, the focus of the group and lots of other issues, now is our chance to do something about it.

Come on, let's let ABANA know what we think and let's make ABANA better!

First Forgings!

See the pics here.

http://www.possumholler.net/FirstForgings/

(How do I upload pics to this site? Or am I not allowed?)

Well...I finally built a stand for my anvil. Then I got my Zoeller burner in my Balloon Time forge and got it going.

Earlier I broke every law known to man and went down to the tracks and picked up some spikes.

Now...what do I do with all these new toys?

I wanted to see what this Zoeller burner was made of so I heated the head of one of the spikes and wailed away on it till it was gone. Basically I just drew it out till it was the same shape as the shaft. Then I drew the whole thing out till it was about twice as long as a regular railroad spike.
