What kind of tool is this?

I got an interesting email from Dietrich challenging me to identify "...this crazy looking hammer" Is it "An import from Vlad the Torturer?" He notes that the circular portion is concave.

Unknown tool, do you have any idea what it is? Unknown tool (other side)

It looks cast

It looks cast...is it cast iron?
What does the rest of the handle look like?
Do you have any better pictures of the ends?

Just from looking at the 2 pictures I figure it to be some sort of wrench or a handle to a valve. Use the heel of your hand in the circular concave part to hold the other side down to mate up with something and turn with the handle. Maybe the pointer indicating how much the valve is open.

Thats my best guess...whos next?

hammer

How about "timber marking" hammer. Loggers had certain patterns for "their" wood.
