Introduction - Hi! I'm Kevin

Warning - Long winded post to follow!

Hello! My name is Kevin Daniell. My grand father was A. E. Daniell of Mableton and my father was Billy Daniell.

I know that it's a long shot that any of you remember the A. E. Daniell and son blacksmith shop in Mableton but thats my heritage. Both of my brothers worked in the shop but I came along a little too late...the shop was closed when I was a small child. I have been reading "A Blacksmithing Primer" by Randy McDaniel and from the description of the forges, I have determined that A. E. Daniell and son was more of a wagon shop.

I have vague memories of the shop. One memory I have is standing in the circle made by the tire of a wagon wheel. That memory includes some burnt fingers.

My father once said that, of the people who had work done at the shop on credit, the ones who were able to pay their tab in a timely manner were employed by the government...so he went to work for the Post Office as a rural carrier. He told stories of picking up axes and maddocks while on his route, sharpening them at the shop and delivering them to their owners the next day. He eventually became the Postmaster in Mableton.

I followed my father into the Postal Service and work in Powder Springs as a city letter carrier. I really would like to try some blacksmithing and I believe that this is the group that could help me in my quest. The bad part is that I work every Saturday so that would make it hard for me to make the third Saturday meetings. I plan to send my membership dues and will try to take some vacation days this fall so I can meet some of you and maybe learn some metal skilz. I'm also looking at some of the beginner classes at the John C Campbell folk school to get me started but I haven't signed up for anything yet.

Anybody want to give weeknight lessons? LOL!

I ended up with my fathers signed copy of "The Art of Blacksmithing" from his estate.

Hi, I'm Kevin

Welcome Kevin! Hope to meet you soon as well. Do take classes at Campbell, a lot of us do and enjoy them--you may also meet some members of the Bealer group there before you see us at a meeting. I enjoyed your recollections of your family's blacksmith shop, do you have any pictures to share by any chance?

No...I don't have any. There was an article about the shop that my sister had laminated to a board. I recently asked her about it and she said that she has it and I could have it if I want it. It hung in my parents home for as long as I can remember.

She said that she thought it was from a local paper called "Mableton Mail". I'll call the Cobb library in Marietta and ask if they have any archives and try to get a copy. If that doesn't work out I'll get the wall hanging and try to take some pictures to post.
