In the past we have had some criticisms of the methods of award and have had a learning curve in the process. I was shocked to hear that so few members are taking advantage of so valuable a prize.
My thinking has changed as a result and I would like to propose the following: 1. At least one scholarship each year would be reserved for newer members(Say those 3 years or less). 2 No one would be eligible to win in successive years. 3 All scholarships would be by luck of the draw. 4. An extra ticket in the drawing would be allowed for everyone who was a scheduled demonstrator at a meeting(this would not apply to those doing a demonstration to meet scholarship requirements).

I understand a lot of people can't take a week of their vaction for schooling. But the money could be used for a weekend class. Refund from invoice only. If someone offered me $600 to learn B/S'ing, I would find a way, short of quiting my day job.
All too often, we have awarded scholarships and never seen the person again. I would worry about designating a $600 gift to someone who has not demonstrated the drive to learn B/s'ing. So, how do we encourage begineers?
No one is presently able to win in successive years.
It is imperative that all scholarships be "luck of the draw"."Need or merit"would have to be passed by the membership, and would assuridly make someone mad, which we don't need.
I would support an extra ticket in the draw for newsletter editor, but not for demonstrators.

The ABBA Scholarship program is one of the greatest assets that a member can and should take advantage of.

The selection process by "luck of the draw" has not worked out evenly in the past. It needs a small amount of tweaking to help balance things out. In the past five years we have had three members that have won twice. There is nothing wrong with that, they went by the current rules,"luck of the draw".

I have been surveying other groups across the country and I am compiling the criteria being used and I will be forwarding it to the ABBA board of directors. It is quite interesting to see how some of the Guilds have worked to spread the scholarships evenly as possible.

We have the best Website and Newsletter so lets work to have the best Scholarship Program also.

We may need to offer to scholarship recepients the opportunity to mentor with a more advanced member, after they take their course; before they make their demonstration at a meeting. This could help take away any anxiety, build confidence and help them help them understand more of what they have learned.

The better the program the more applicants we will attract.
